ABSTRACT
        Ankara-Beypazarı Coal Cannot be used as domestic fuel in Ankara where the sir pollution is severe, because of its high sulfur Content. Reduction of S0x amount relapsed to the atmosphere with the stack gases during combustion of such lignites for heating porposes can be achieved by Fre-Treating the coal or by adding Sorbent into the combustion chamber.
        In this study, lime which is used a sorbent, was added in to the lump coal and the briquettes of this coal in varying Ca/S ratios.
        Lump coal and briquettes mixed with lime was burned in a grate-stove, and their combustion efficiency and the amount of sulfur fixed in the ash were determined. Thus, the effect of two different methods of adding lime enthe combustion efficiency and the sulfur amount fixed was studied.
        Because a great portion of the total sulfur in Anksra-Beypazarı coal is combustible, total sulfur Valve was taker as basis in the study, High sulfur content of the coal used in the experiments made it necessary to add sulfur in to the coal in Large proportions and this reduced the heat efficiency.
        Considering the sulfur retention and heat efficiency Values the optimum Ca/S molar ratio was determined to be 1.00-1.25 for the lump coal and 0.95-1-15 for the briquettes,
        It was found that by adding line to the lump coal in 1.00-1.25 Ca/S molar ratio, at least 50 % of the total sulfur could be fixed and atleast 75 % of the heating efficiency of the lump coal without lime could be obtained and that by adding lime to the briquettes in 0.95-1.15 Ca/S molar ratio at least 57.5 % sulfur could be fixed fend at least 85 % of the heating efficiency of the briquettes without lime could be obtained.
        Accordingly, considering the combustion efficiency and fixation of sulfur in the ash, the addition of lime into briquettes is an appropriate method.
