ABSTRACT
        In this study, the possibility of smokless fuel production from lump Tunçbilek coal was investigated by the use of direct heating method at low temperature.
        After carbonization of Tunçbilek coal about 450°C lump char which is larger than 10 mm in size has been removed. Remaining fine char was briquetted in the roll-press by using 10% molasses.
        Combustion characteristics in addition to the chemical and physical properties were investigated of the lump char and the briquettes. Higher combustion efficiencies and lower smoke emissions were found compared to the original Tunçbilek coal. Lump char and the briquettes bad sufficient mechanical strength.
