ABSTRACT
        This work involved the determination of the coking characteristics of Zonguldak, Armutçuk and four imported coals, supplied by the Ereğli Steel and Iron Works, as well as that of their optimum blending ratios for coke production.
        Carbonization tests of coals and their blends were performed in a Jenkner retort and in a 7-kg oven. The cokes thus obtained were evaluated for their chemical and physical properties. Further, washability tests were carried out upon the Zonguldak sample.
        The binary blend of 15 % weakly coking Armutçuk with Zonguldak coal was observed to yield a better coke than the latter alone.
        As far as the ternary blends are concerned, up to 20 % of Armutçuk coal can be satisfactorily added to the imported coals, with Zonguldak coal as the matrix. Also, the effects of the coking conditions upon the quality of coke were investigated in the case of the binary blend 85 % Zonguldak  15 % Armutçuk.
