• GEOLOGY AND ORE DEPOSİTS OF THE SIZMA-LADİK MERCURY DİSTRİCT, TURKEY

FOREWORD
This report presents the technical results of the "Fourth CENTO Training Program in Geological Mapping Techniques" held during the summer of 1969 in a mercury mining district in central Turkey. These training programs, which have been conducted annually since 1966, have provided practical on-the-site instruction in mapping and evaluation of mineral deposits to more than 75 graduate geologists and mining engineers of the CENTO regional countries.
The CENTO Training Programs were initiated on the recommendation of the Advisory Group on Minerals Development. Trainee Participation has been financed by The CENTO Multilateral Technical Cooperation Fund to which all five CENTO Countries contribute. Since its inception, the program has been conducted under the direction of Dr Edgar H. Bailey, of the US Geological Survey, under funding from the Office of the Economic Coordinator for CENTO Affairs, Agency for International Development, US Department of State. Also since its beginning, Professor John W Barnes, of the University College of Swansea in Wales, has been provided as an expert instructor by the UK Overseas Development Administration. During the fourth Training Program, discussed in this report, Professor Matthew P Nackowski, of the University of Utah, also was made available as an expert instructor by the Office of the Economic Coordinator.
Other CENTO Training Programs in Geological Mapping Techniques have been held at the Küre copper pyrite mine in Turkey, the Lakan lead-zinc mine in Iran, the Hindubagh Chromite Area in west Pakistan, and the Kushk Zinc district in Iran. References to CENTO Publications about the geology of the first two mines listed above can be found in the bibliography at the end of this report.
The results of The CENTO Training Programs in geologic mapping, like that reported on here, have more than justified the vision of The Advisory Group on Mineral Development responsible for its initiation. In addition to accomplishing their primary purpose, namely providing training in basic skills needed for proper discovery, evaluation, and utilization of the mineral resources, the geologic studies made by the trainees and staff have yielded recommendations regarding additional exploration that in at least one mine led directly to the early discovery of large amounts of previously unknown ore. It is hoped that the recommendations contained in this report will prove to be equally rewarding.

US Economic Coordinator for CENTO Affairs
