GYPSUM OCCURRENCES IN TURKEY
The most extensive gypsum deposits in Turkey are near Aksaray, near Ulukisla (Vilayet Nigde), near
Sivas, east of Denizli, on the railvay line halfway between Eskisehir and Ankara, at Tuzluca (Vilayet Kars),
Askale (Vilayet Erzurum), Balâ (Vilayet Ankara), Gemlik (Vilayet Bursa) and near Çankiri.
With the eception of the occurrence at Kizilyerköy (E of Denizli),which is intercalated between
Mesozoic limestones, the gypsum depoaita occur in the upper Tertiary. Some of them are regarded as
Oligocene, but this stratigraphic classification becomea mora and more doubtful. At the time when the
geological map 1/800.000 was prepared, the large gypsum depoaita vtere found to be younger than
Eocene and since they. Tere covered by Neogene sediments, they vere plaoed in the Olicocene, without
conclusive evidence. Since then, more detailed work has shown that at least some of the gypsum deposits
which formerly had been placed in the Oligocene, really belong into the upper Miocene.
The gypsum deposit at Kizilyerköy forms the core of an E-W striking anticline vhich is exposed in two
parallel valleys. The lower portion of the grypsam deposit, thich rises appr. 9 m above the valley floor, is
covered by a detrital fan. The N and 3 boundary of the deposit are not vell defined-gypsum is indented with
massive limestone, which also forms banks, up to 1.5 m thick, in the gypsum.
