This volume represents the first in a series of reports on an airborne geophysical survey carried out during 1960
for the purpose of assessing mineral potential in three selected areas of Turkey. The survey was performed by Canadian
Aero Service Limited, of Ottawa, Canada (CAS), for the Mineral Research and Exploration Institute of Turkey, or
Maden Tetkik ve Arama Enstitüsü (MTA), with financial aid of the government of the United States of America
through the Development Loan Fund (DLF).
The primary aim of the survey was to detect and outline deposits of iron, or other magnetic mineral occurrences,
by means of an airborne magnetometer. Radiometric detection devices were used for supplementary geological
information and the possible discovery of uranium. As an aid to interpretation of the airborne results, and to add
weight to any recommendations for further investigation by MTA, it was agreed that the airborne project should
include a certain amount of photo-geological interpretation and the spot-checking of selected sites on the ground.
Contract negotiations were carried out during 1959. On January 11, 1960, Contract DLF 53/ CAS 9123 was
signed by MTA and CAS, authorizing the work to proceed. The survey was begun in Area III, in central Anatolia. For
the first few months, flying was limited by bad weather. In May it was agreed that Area IV, in eastern Anatolia, should
be completed during the best of the summer weather, and plans were changed accordingly.
